South Korea’s “Tomorrow” is a standout show that ingeniously blends science fiction, fantasy, and mental health narratives. Set in a secret world where technology and Korean mysticism coalesce, the series goes beyond the ordinary by skillfully integrating speculative elements to explore the complexities of mental health and the unfortunate large number of people that take their own lives due to the work culture and South Korean societal pressure.
The plot, based on a Naver Webtoon, is build as an detective-drama where each episode our main characters try to unravel why their subject is pushed to the brink of death and how they can aid to resolve it in order to prevent it. Alongside the overarching story of main character dealing with her own trauma and the reason she became a ‘death-god’. The series takes a very nuanced and serious stance on several cultural phenomena in South Korea such as familial pressure, bullying both in school and office, and societal pressure due to conservative views, which have been indicated as some of the top trauma causes in the country.

“Tomorrow” refrains from stigmatizing mental health issues, portraying them as inherent aspects of the human experience. The series contributes meaningfully to the global conversation on mental health, fostering empathy and understanding. By weaving a compelling narrative that combines genre elements with a genuine exploration of emotional struggles, “Tomorrow” stands as a powerful testament to the transformative potential of storytelling in addressing crucial societal issues.
Personally it was very cathartic to watch the series, however, it is possible to watch it only for its fantasy sci-fi elements. The acting by Kim Hee-Sun really pulls out emotion and sympathy for both her character and the people she is trying to save, making this a great contender for a top K-drama of 2022.
I definitely recommend it!
